Today, Paul and Michael explain some changes in tax law that affect inheriting money in an IRA. Listen along as they explain why investors have 10 years to decide what to do with the money in an inherited IRA and how some investors who aren’t asking for help are creating tax issues for themselves and turning this money back over to the government in taxes.

Capturing market returns is one of the biggest factors of investing success, and it comes from proper diversification. After Paul did a recent webinar on the topic, an investor brings Paul a LPL Financial product called the Strategic Asset Management Program (SAMs) and wants to know: Is this product capturing marketing returns or is it gambling with investors’ money? In this two-part episode, Paul and Michael look through this product to find the answer, but also teach you where an educated investor looks to find out what is really happening in an investment product. Listen along as these advisors discover what SAMs are doing with investors’ dollars and give you some tools to spot suspicious behavior in other products.

Why Not Go All In On Emerging Markets?
Monday Aug 14, 2023
Monday Aug 14, 2023
After a question in the last episode about investing in emerging markets, Ira asks Paul to clarify if we should be investing in emerging markets at all. Paul explains that the investor who asked this question wanted to know why you wouldn’t want to go all in on companies from emerging markets if they have historically higher returns. Listen along as Paul and Ira explain the logic behind building a portfolio with investments that don’t always move together and how emerging markets fit into an academic approach. Later in the episode, the advisors talk about taxes and investing with an article that gives investors seven reasons not to invest in their Roth IRAs.

Is the Media Predicting Downturns Because They Care About Investors?
Friday Aug 11, 2023
Friday Aug 11, 2023
Today, Paul asks Ira a thoughtful question about how financial media covers the news: Is the media predicting downturns because they care about investors? Both Paul and Ira conclude that if these media personalities can’t beat the market themselves, and if they don’t sell off their investments when they make these predictions, then they’re encouraging you to bet your money on something that they aren’t willing to bet their money on. Paul cautions investors: When someone makes a correct prediction about a downturn, it makes them look “in the know” and works to further their interests. This is why working with an advisor is better than blindly trusting someone you don’t know. Later in the episode, Paul answers a listener's question about investing in BRICs.

This Is Why Getting Out of Volatile Markets Is a Big Mistake
Thursday Aug 10, 2023
Thursday Aug 10, 2023
A big problem with wanting to be out of the market when it’s down and in the market when it’s up is that the market doesn’t move in a straight line, but rather it jumps around to different values at any given moment. Today, Paul and Ira talk about how investors experience the most gains in the market a few days a year and why the investors who crave control and can’t handle the markets’ bumpy ride sell low and buy high. Listen along to learn why volatile markets are tempting to leave but ultimately work in the investor’s favor. Later in the episode, Ira encourages people close to retirement to talk with an advisor about what their expenses will look like because he sees that most investors have an unclear picture of what they will be spending in retirement.
